Group: Opening Sequence Treatment

The scene is set in a fairly large greenhouse, everything inside will be very clean and orderly. The character is a bizarre, troubled male – he gets dressed in a white overcoat, hospital gloves (pulling the gloves on tightly so they snap back onto his wrist), and a dust mask. He proceeds to engage in meticulous actions, which implies his insanity and reveal the psychopathic nature of the character, however at this point it is still unclear whether he is the protagonist or antagonist.

He is pictured meticulously pruning plants, in an unusually specific manner, before proceeding to run tests on the plants. At this point – the snipping actions will be amplified, with classical music playing in the background (this is constant); this small, old-fashioned radio will be shown on camera. He is also pictured trimming small plants with nail scissors. As he takes tests on the plants – a handbook is shown to his side, the character opens it after licking his finger and writes down notes from the tests just taken, with a feather quill.

The character is pictured rotating his eyes around the room, while a buzzing fly sound gets closer (louder) in the background. There is a sudden slapping sound, and the fly is pictured dropping onto the handbook. The character then proceeds to pull out a scalpel and dissect the fly into quarters, placing it in a petri dish and storing it in his pocket – this has clear connotations of psychopathic tendencies and therefore revealing this character is the antagonist.

The audience sees the character snap off his gloves, place them to the side, and slowly draw the scalpel across his hand. He is then pictured looking internally satisfied, before blood slowly drips onto his handbook. He then slowly absorbs the blood with tissue, and then wraps a bandage tightly around his wrist and hand. The audience brutally witnesses blood seep through the protection. It is clear that he takes pleasure from this ordeal.

The character takes deep breaths, and the classical music lowers in volume meanwhile, before calming himself and sitting down, he places his head in his hands; and the camera reveals his bloody fingernails.

Suddenly, the audience witnesses the character snap and get angry, he jumps up quickly, walks sinisterly over to the old-fashioned radio, and the camera captures his hand slowly turn up the volume.

As he leaves the room; a handbook is shown, the audience will see graphic images of victims with red crosses over them, as well as scribbly but organised notes on deadly plants he cares for. The pages will flick mysteriously, without anyone in the room.

The camera then cuts to the character 5 metres past the door, walking towards the garage. The character is positioned taking up the doorway of the garage door, and walks slightly to the left – half out of shot, to get some tools. The camera dolly's to the left, past a small area of the wall and reveals the antagonist through the window looking at the tools at his disposal. The next shot is a POV pan - of the tools in front of him, and latin labelled jars (only the top of the jars is revealed.) The camera pans until the antagonist selects his tool, and then stops and shows him pick up the tool. Then - the man walks slowly over to his victims, covered in plain white sheets. At this point jump cuts from a POV shot from one of the victims, and a POV shot from the antagonist - reveal the white cloth being taken off, and showing 'cut-lines' in quarters on the victim's face. The final shot is a POV shot from the victim's perspective - panning upwards at the menacingly looking antagonist, looking down on him. CUT

  1. Excellent treatment. While a seemingly 'simple' scene; this will actually be quite challenging technically in terms of set design and use of camera to convey tension in a closed space. Make sure you have taken some practice shots (still or video) in the location for the recce.
